The MR, via Anne-Charlotte d’Ursel and David Weytsman, have submitted a legislative proposal aimed at banning the use of electric bicycles and scooters on heavily frequented pedestrian areas in the capital.
The MPs justify the option of the ban by "the explosion of road insecurity in recent years and a desire to guarantee the safety and comfort of persons with reduced mobility who are facing increasing difficulties in walking on the city's pedestrian areas or Ixelles' streets. In the eyes of the two liberal elected officials, the mobility plan of the PS-Ecolo-DEFI majority "Good Move" promotes cohabitation on a series of roads. However, in recent years, the increase in shared spaces has created "a real chaos, endangering the safety of many individuals". The heavily frequented pedestrian areas in the city center are no exception and are often congested, making circulation difficult, even dangerous for persons with reduced mobility and seniors whose complaints are multiplying.
The proposal submitted by the MR therefore provides for the formal prohibition of the use of electric bicycles and scooters on heavily frequented pedestrian areas that do not have a dedicated and separate lane for pedestrians.
